Winner of the Washington Writers’ Publishing House Translation Prize, Zarpamos is the first complete collection of poetry translated into English from across the prolific career of Guadalupe Ángela. The poems, skillfully translated by Yael Kiken, traverse the rugged landscape of knowing–from how it feels to be invisible and naïve to the world and to oneself, to how it feels to come into being and to recognize one’s own shape and voice as a woman, as an artist, and as a human being. Ángela follows this thread through striking dreams and everyday experiences, over floors of adobe and jacaranda trees, through cave mouths and sterile dentist’s chairs, permeating each encounter with wonder, curiosity, longing, and play.

Meet the Author
Yael Kiken
Yael Kiken is a teacher and translator. She studied literature at the University of Michigan and Georgetown University, and has taught with the Prison Creative Arts Project, the New English Literature Program, Bilingual Education for Central America in Cortés, Honduras, and Georgetown University’s Community Scholars program. She teaches writing and literature at Howard University and lives in Washington, DC, with her family. Zarpamos is her debut collection in translation.

Guadalupe Ángela
Guadalupe Ángela (1969-2020) was a prolific writer and beloved teacher from Oaxaca, Mexico. She published several books of poetry, including Hiedra de luz (2004), Conchas donde guarda la jacaranda sus semillas (2009), Poemario de las vírgenes (2013), A lápiz haikús (2013), and Autorretratos de una joven bailarina (2019). Her work is part of several anthologies and has been translated into Italian, German, and English.
